PEMF and Plasma Therapy for Fibromyalgia — What the Research Actually Shows

If you have fibromyalgia, you already know how frustrating the search for relief can be.

The pain is real. The fatigue is real. The brain fog is real. And yet so many people with fibromyalgia are told by their doctors that there's little more that can be done — that managing symptoms with medication is the best available option.

But a growing body of published clinical research is pointing in a different direction. And people with fibromyalgia are paying attention.

This post looks at what the research actually says about PEMF and plasma frequency therapy — two approaches that are generating genuine interest in the chronic pain community — and what they might offer for people who feel like they've tried everything.

What Is Fibromyalgia — and Why Is It So Hard to Treat?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties and heightened sensitivity to pain. It affects an estimated one in twenty Australians — the majority of them women — and is notoriously difficult to treat effectively.

Conventional treatment typically involves a combination of pain medication, antidepressants, sleep aids and physiotherapy. For many people, these approaches provide only partial relief — and often come with side effects that add to the burden of an already exhausting condition.

The challenge with fibromyalgia is that it isn't simply a musculoskeletal problem. Research increasingly points to central sensitisation — a state in which the nervous system becomes hypersensitive, amplifying pain signals throughout the body. This is why fibromyalgia responds poorly to treatments that target a specific site of injury. The problem isn't localised. It's systemic.

What Is PEMF Therapy?

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. It works by delivering gentle electromagnetic pulses to the body at specific frequencies — stimulating cellular activity, reducing inflammation and supporting the body's natural repair processes.

The basic principle is grounded in well-established science: the human body is fundamentally electromagnetic. Every cell in your body generates and responds to electrical signals. When those signals are disrupted — by stress, toxins, injury or chronic illness — cellular communication breaks down and the body struggles to regulate and repair itself.

PEMF therapy works by delivering targeted electromagnetic pulses that support and restore that cellular communication — gently nudging the body back toward its natural state of balance.

Sessions are completely passive and non-invasive. There are no needles, no drugs, and nothing strenuous required. You simply relax while the therapy does its work.

What the Research Actually Shows

This is where it gets interesting.

A randomised controlled pilot study published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine found that PEMF therapy produced significantly greater reductions in widespread pain index scores, symptom severity and pain intensity in fibromyalgia patients compared to placebo — with results that were statistically significant across all three measures. (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Triple Energy Pain Treatment for Fibromyalgia, 2022, PubMed)

A separate randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical study published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine found that PEMF therapy produced significant improvements in fibromyalgia impact scores, pain levels, depression scores and overall quality of life compared to sham treatment — with benefits maintained at 12 week follow-up. (Sutbeyaz et al., 2009, PubMed — Low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in fibromyalgia)

A third randomised controlled study involving 108 women with fibromyalgia found that low-energy PEMF therapy increased microcirculation and produced meaningful improvements in pain and stiffness compared to an inactive device. (Multanen et al., 2018, Bioelectromagnetics — Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in the treatment of pain and other symptoms in fibromyalgia)

Importantly, the research consistently shows that PEMF is well tolerated. Side effects are rare and minor. For people with fibromyalgia who are already managing the side effects of multiple medications, this matters enormously.

Perhaps most significantly — PEMF appears to work through mechanisms that are directly relevant to fibromyalgia's underlying drivers. Research shows that PEMF stimulation can reduce neuroinflammation, modulate pain signalling pathways and support nervous system regulation. In other words, it targets the central sensitisation that sits at the heart of fibromyalgia — not just the symptoms it produces.

What Is Plasma Therapy — and How Does It Work Alongside PEMF?

Plasma therapy is a frequency-based approach that uses an ionised gas plasma field to deliver bio-electrical frequencies throughout the entire body simultaneously. Unlike contact-based therapies that target specific areas, plasma therapy floods the whole body with frequencies — supporting cellular repair, nervous system regulation and overall biofield balance at a systemic level.

This systemic delivery is particularly relevant for fibromyalgia — a condition that by its nature is not localised to one area but affects the entire body and nervous system.

At Ashanti Frequency Healing our in-person sessions combine PEMF and plasma therapy simultaneously. The PEMF coil targets specific areas of pain and tension with focused electromagnetic pulses, while the plasma field delivers supportive frequencies throughout the entire body at the same time. This dual-modality approach works on two levels at once — local and systemic — in a way that neither therapy could achieve alone.

The result is a session that addresses both the localised pain experience of fibromyalgia and the underlying nervous system dysregulation that drives it.

Sessions take place in our relaxing Grafton offices located above the Post Office in Victoria Street. Clients recline comfortably while the therapy does its work — there is nothing physically demanding, nothing invasive, and nothing to do except rest.

Why Fibromyalgia Clients Are Well Suited to Frequency Therapy

Fibromyalgia is one of those conditions where the conventional medical toolkit runs out of options relatively quickly. Most people living with fibromyalgia have already tried multiple medications, physiotherapy, dietary changes and lifestyle modifications — often with limited or inconsistent results. This makes fibromyalgia clients particularly well suited to frequency therapy for several reasons:

The passive nature of sessions removes the exertion barrier. Fibromyalgia fatigue is real and debilitating. Many therapeutic approaches — exercise programs, physiotherapy, even some relaxation therapies — require a level of physical or cognitive effort that fibromyalgia clients simply don't have on difficult days. Frequency therapy requires nothing. You arrive, you recline, you rest. The therapy works regardless of how you feel when you walk in the door.

The non-invasive delivery removes the sensitivity barrier. Many people with fibromyalgia experience heightened sensitivity to touch, pressure and sensation. The plasma component of our sessions involves no physical contact whatsoever — frequencies are delivered through the field itself. This makes it accessible for clients who find hands-on therapies uncomfortable or overwhelming.

The systemic approach matches the systemic nature of the condition. Fibromyalgia isn't localised. It affects the whole body and the nervous system that governs it. A therapy that delivers frequencies throughout the entire body simultaneously — rather than targeting one area at a time — is inherently better matched to the way fibromyalgia actually works.

It works alongside existing care. Frequency therapy is a complementary wellness modality — it doesn't replace your doctor, your medication or your existing treatment plan. Many of our clients continue with their conventional care while adding frequency therapy sessions, finding that the two approaches support each other rather than competing.

What to Expect at Ashanti Frequency Healing

Every client who comes to Ashanti begins with a New Client Intake Session — a relaxed, unhurried conversation where we take the time to truly understand your history, your symptoms and your goals. For fibromyalgia clients this is particularly important, because no two people experience fibromyalgia the same way.

From there we design a personalised program combining PEMF and plasma therapy, tailored specifically to your body and your individual presentation. Programs run for six weeks. In-person sessions are available at our Grafton studio. For clients who are unable to travel, our Bio-Electric and Scalar frequency programs are available remotely from anywhere in Australia via quantum delivery — an excellent alternative for those whose fatigue or mobility makes regular travel difficult.

We understand that fibromyalgia clients are often understandably sceptical after years of treatments that promised more than they delivered. That's why we offer a 25% discount on your first in-person PEMF and plasma session — so you can experience the therapy for yourself before committing to a full program.

Is PEMF and Plasma Therapy Worth Trying for Fibromyalgia?

If you've been living with fibromyalgia and feeling like you've exhausted your options — the honest answer is yes, it's worth exploring.

The published research is genuinely encouraging. The therapy is safe, passive and well tolerated. The dual-modality approach we use at Ashanti — combining PEMF and plasma simultaneously — addresses both the localised pain experience and the systemic nervous system dysregulation that drives fibromyalgia. And the passive, non-contact nature of sessions makes it accessible even on your most difficult days.

We won't promise miracles. What we will promise is that we'll listen, we'll take your experience seriously, and we'll design a program that genuinely reflects what your body needs.

Your first step is a New Client Intake Session — a relaxed conversation with no pressure and no obligation. And your first in-person PEMF and plasma session comes with a 25% discount, so you can experience the therapy for yourself before deciding on a full program.

If you're in the Clarence Valley, Grafton or anywhere in Northern Rivers NSW — we'd love to meet you. And if you're further afield, our remote frequency programs mean distance is no barrier to getting started.
